About the Environmental Commission
The Raritan Township Environmental Commission has been helping to protect the environmental assets in our community since it was formed in the early 1970s. The Commission is made up of five regular and two alternate volunteer members who are appointed by the governing body.
The Commission is an advisory body whose primary mission is to provide information on environmental issues to the Raritan Township Committee, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, township professionals, and residents. The Commission also collaborates with the township’s Open Space Committee and Green Team to protect natural resources and provide a safe environment for all. See us on Facebook!

February 2025 EARLY RELEASE

- Sustainable Jersey CERTIFIED: Raritan Township Achieves Bronze; Seeking Silver
- 250 points accumulated; seeking 100 more for elevated status
RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Last November, the Township of Raritan received its bronze-level Sustainable Jersey recertification at the Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon during the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) Conference in Atlantic City. With a current total of 250 points, the Environmental Commission and its Green Team is aspiring to achieve a Silver Certification by 2026.
Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities and schools that strive to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain the quality of the environment over the long term. This statewide program allows participants to earn points for various environmental, safety and health-related actions.

Working with state agencies, non-profit organizations, foundations, academia and industry, Sustainable Jersey researches and recommends what practices communities should implement to contribute to a sustainable future. The program awards its prestigious certification to applicants who have provided documentary evidence that their actions satisfy rigorous standards set forth by subject matter experts.
Since Raritan’s first Bronze certification in 2011, the township has championed implementing solutions to crucial environmental challenges through its Green Team and Environmental Commission – from waste reduction and recycling to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and protecting natural resources. According to Maureen Jones, program coordinator for Sustainable Jersey, Raritan Township has been certified previously in the 2014, 2017, 2022 and 2023 application cycles – all at the bronze designation.

In 2022, the Environmental Commission and Green Team undertook the task of once again attaining a Bronze level certification by completing various actions such as:
- Holding a Green Fair
- Buying Electricity from a Renewable Source
- Farmland Preservation
- Maintaining a Community Garden
- Environmental Commission Reviewing of Site Plan Applications
With only 100 points needed to attain the Silver Certification, we hope to achieve that with your help! If you’d like to be part of our Green Team and help us towards a Silver certification, contact us at
