About the Environmental Commission
The Raritan Township Environmental Commission has been helping to protect the environmental assets in our community since it was formed in the early 1970s. The Commission is made up of five regular and two alternate volunteer members who are appointed by the governing body.
The Commission is an advisory body whose primary mission is to provide information on environmental issues to the Raritan Township Committee, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, township professionals, and residents. The Commission also collaborates with the township’s Open Space Committee and Green Team to protect natural resources and provide a safe environment for all. See us on Facebook!

RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Raritan Township Environmental Commission and its Green Team announced it will host a hybrid Septic System Maintenance Presentation at the municipal building Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7:00 p.m., at 1 Municipal Drive in Flemington and virtually via ZOOM: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2953351895?omn=84279790158.
DID YOU KNOW: In Hunterdon County, most single-family homes have a septic system and according to the Raritan Headwaters Association (“RHA”), malfunctioning septic systems are one of the most common causes of contaminated water?
Caring for a residential septic system is vital for maintaining a healthy home and protecting the environment. A poorly functioning septic system can cost the homeowner tens of thousands of dollars to replace.
To prevent future issues for homeowners, the presentation will include the importance of regular maintenance of their septic tanks, the environmental impacts of well contamination, and how the proper management of onsite wastewater systems can provide clean and safe water for everyone.

The presentation will feature two keynote speakers: Carla Hobbs, Environmental Health Coordinator from the Hunterdon County Board of Health; and Samantha LaRocca, Well Testing Program Coordinator for Raritan Headwaters Association.
More information about septic tank maintenance can be found on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Septic Care and Maintenance page.

Don’t Trash That Halloween Pumpkin – Recycle It!
RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — If you’re looking to properly dispose of your Halloween pumpkin that was sitting on your front porch, the Raritan Township Environmental Commission and its Green Team announced there are two local places that will recycle, not trash them, for FREE!
Some local farms encourage residents to bring their unpainted, unrotten and non-moldy pumpkins, squash and gourds because they make a nutritious meal for farm animals like pigs and goats. Plus, recycling pumpkins keeps them out of landfills where they decompose and release methane, a climate warming greenhouse gas.
Local farms accepting pumpkins are:
- OneCompostCan, alongside their weekly food waste recycling buckets, at the Stangl Factory Farmers’ Market (50 Stangl Road in Flemington) collecting every Saturday until Thanksgiving from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. For more information, email
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call (609) 498-5221; and - Hunterdon Community Farmers’ Market at Dvoor Farm (111 Mine Street in Flemington) collecting every Sunday in November from 9:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. Residents can drop off their pumpkins at Gorgeous Goat Creamery.
