Environmental Commission

About the Environmental Commission

The Raritan Township Environmental Commission has been helping to protect the environmental assets in our community since it was formed in the early 1970s. The Commission is made up of five regular and two alternate volunteer members who are appointed by the governing body.

The Commission is an advisory body whose primary mission is to provide information on environmental issues to the Raritan Township Committee, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, township professionals, and residents. The Commission also collaborates with its Green Team and Open Space Advisory  Committee to protect natural resources and provide a safe environment for all. To learn more about the Commission's activities, see their Facebook page!

MARCH 2026 SPOTLIGHT EDITION

Published: March 6, 2026

RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Beware - Bird Flu outbreaks in NJ Recently portions of trails in Dukes Island Park and the Environmental Center in Basking Ridge were temporarily closed due to the presence of dead birds from bird flu (Avian influenza). Outbreaks have also been reported in South Jersey. Most of the birds reported or discovered dead are Canada geese although bird flu can affect chickens, turkeys and ducks. While bird flu generally poses a low risk to humans, people should avoid touching any dead birds they may come across, avoid walking among or touching bird droppings and keep pets away from live or dead birds. If you do come across dead birds (especially in groups of 5 or more) you should report them to the NJDEP Fish and Wildlife Office of Information Systems at: NJDEP Wild Bird Disease Reporting Form. For more information go to: NJDEP| Fish & Wildlife | HPAI - Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
