There are three steps to completing a marriage in New Jersey.

1. Marriage License Application: Residents of New Jersey who plan to marry in the State of New Jersey must complete the marriage license application in the municipality where one of the couple members resides.

  1. Please email or call the Registrar’s office to set up a Marriage License Application Appointment. The couple will need to bring a witness over the age of 18. The fee is $28.
  2. The Marriage Application is valid for up to six months before it must be issued as a Marriage License. The earliest a Marriage License can be issued is 72 hours after the initial appointment at the Registrar’s office.
  3. If completing the application ahead of the appointment, please do not sign the second page. This will be completed with the Registrar at the appointment.
    • To schedule an appointment, email the registrar (registrar@raritantwpnj.gov) with proposed dates and times for the appointment, residence address, phone number, and intended date and location of marriage.

2. Marriage License: Once the Marriage License is issued, the couple has 30 days to get married before that license expires. The Marriage License is completed at the wedding ceremony by the officiant and two witnesses.

  • There are 4 copies of the license. Copies 1 and 2 are returned to the Municipality where the ceremony took place (regardless of where your marriage license application took place). Copy 3 goes to the couple and copy 4 can remain with the officiant. Note: This is not legal proof of marriage. Note: Copies 1 and 2 can be hand-delivered to the Registrar or mailed by placing two stamps on the envelope provided.

3. Marriage Certificate: Once the Registrar of the Municipality where the ceremony took place receives your Marriage License, a Marriage Certificate can be issued. This is your legal proof of Marriage. The fees are set by the municipality issuing the certificate. Raritan Township’s fee is $25 per copy.

If you would like to get married through a Civil Ceremony in the Township courtroom, email the current Township Mayor, Bob King or the Township Administrator and Former Mayor, Karen Gilbert with the following information:

  • Names and Telephone Number;
  • Several date and time options for the ceremony;
  • If there will be an exchange of rings;
  • If there will be anything the couple would want to say to each other or have the officiant include;
  • If the couple can bring two witnesses; and
  • If there will be other family members or friends in attendance.

** Please note that Administrator Gilbert is only available to officiate during regular business hours: 8:30AM – 4:30PM, Monday-Friday. **
