Sidewalk Maintenance

Sidewalk Maintenance for the Homeowner

Inspections

Homeowners are responsible for the sidewalk on their property. Pedestrian facilities must be continuous and unobstructed for accessible persons.

When sidewalks are installed or repaired, it follows the guidelines provided below. The homeowner is responsible in maintaining these guidelines. A sidewalk permit is required and can be found by clicking here.

  • The sidewalk must be a minimum of four (4) feet wide unobstructed;
  • The cross slope must be less than 2% or one (1) inch vertical over 50 inches horizontally;
  • The running slope must be less than 5%- or 1-inch vertical over 20 inches horizontally;
  • The vertical displacement between joints is a maximum of a quarter (¼) inches;
  • The gaps and cracks must be less than ¼ to one-half (½) inches wide; and
  • The surface must be broom finish.

Maintenance

It is the responsibility of the homeowner to keep the sidewalk clear of debris and snow. The homeowner must be prompt in the cleaning and clearing of the sidewalk to prevent pedestrian injury. This will also prolong the lifespan of the sidewalk.

The homeowner can maintain sidewalks that has bad joints by beveling and grinding the edges. The homeowner can also fill small cracks with epoxy crack sealant to extend the service life of the sidewalk. The township’s sidewalk ordinance is codified under Chapter 410, Article IV.
