April 15, 2025: New Jersey Uniform Fire Code Update

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ (NJDCA) Division of Fire Safety most recent requirements were adopted, Apr. 15, 2025.

Below is a summary of the requirements specific to food truck vendors:

  • Propane transported/stored on the truck cannot exceed 200 pounds aggregate capacity;
  • Gas System must be sufficiently protected against damage;
  • A Propane gas alarm installed in the vehicle. The alarm must be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (DOL-OSHA) to test products to applicable product safety standards (e.g., UL); and
    • To learn more about OSHA’s NRTL Program, visit their resource page.
  • The LP (Liquefied Petroleum) containers and piping must be inspected and tagged annually by an approved company registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

In addition, for the annual LP gas inspection, Raritan Township's Fire Safety Office recommends contacting your propane supplier for recommendations. Licensed plumbers are eligible to do the inspections.
