Residents Reminded to Shovel Snow Off Property, Sidewalks

RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The snowy, icy weather is here, and the Township is reminding residents to keep their property safe during the upcoming winter months.

Property owners are responsible for removing snow and ice from the public sidewalks that are on their premises, according to Township law.

Sidewalks need to be kept clear to provide a safe route for all walkers, especially for kids heading to and from the bus stop or to school.

Failure to remove or treat snow and ice on the sidewalks on your property within 12 hours of accumulation may require the Department of Public Works to come and clear it. The cost of the removal may result in a tax lien being placed on your property plus a $1,000 fine.

Residents are also asked to help keep the streets clear during snow events. The Township prohibits vehicles from parking on snow-covered streets.

Whether it be shoveling your sidewalk or making sure your street is clear of vehicles when it’s snowing, the Township requests all residents to uphold our local winter safety standards.

For more information about the Township’s laws regarding winter weather, see Chapter 410, Article VII, and Chapter 455, Article II, Section 6 & Section 7 from the online municipal code platform.
