Raritan Township Adopts Ordinance Prohibiting Data Centers
RARITAN TOWNSHIP, NJ — Raritan Township has drawn a clear line on future development: data centers are not permitted here. Mayor Brad Perry and the entire Township Committee unanimously adopted an ordinance amending the Township’s Land Development Code to formally and explicitly prohibit data centers throughout Raritan Township.
At the center of the amendment is the addition of “Data Centers” to the list of prohibited uses, which bans data centers in all zoning districts in the Township. The amended ordinance also establishes clear definitions and zoning standards to ensure that a data center cannot be classified under another use that is permitted within the Township. Specifically, the amended code states that warehouses, flex spaces, or research facilities shall not include data centers.
For businesses and other permitted uses that rely on computer servers as part of their normal operations, the ordinance maintains an important distinction. An Accessory Server Room is permitted when it is located within a principal building and used solely to support the principal use on the property. Such space is limited to no more than 10% of the building’s gross floor area or 2,000 square feet, whichever is less.
The ordinance is part of the Township’s broader approach to proactive land-use planning and establishing regulations that reflect the community’s long-term planning objectives.
