ATTENTION: Township Reminding Residents About “No-Knock” Law and its Protections

RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Unlike Anita Ward’s 70’s disco hit “(You Can) Ring My Bell”, the Township is reminding residents of their right to tell solicitors, “You can[not] ring my bell, anytime.”

What is the "No-Knock" Ordinance?

According to the Township’s ordinance, residents have the right to say “no” to door-to-door solicitors by signing up for the Township’s “No-Knock” List.

This local law (Chapter 347-6 of the Municipal Code) lets residents stop solicitors, vendors, and peddlers from coming to their door. It helps prevent unwanted visits and protects your privacy.

How to Register

To join the "No-Knock" List:

  • Fill out the online "No-Knock" List application form; and
  • Include your name, home address, and contact info.
    • Only your address will appear on the list. One person per household should register.

What Happens After You Register?

Licensed solicitors get a copy of the "No-Knock" list and are advised to avoid those homes.

What If a Solicitor Violates the Rules?

  • Report unlicensed solicitors or violators of the No-Knock List to the Raritan Township Police (non-emergency): (908) 782-8889; and
  • Violators may be fined up to $2,000, and repeat offenders may have to do community service.

Who Needs a License to Solicit?

Anyone who wants to go door-to-door for commercial purposes listed in the law must:

  • Get a solicitor’s license from the Clerk’s Office; and
  • Wear or show their license clearly.

Who Is Exempt from the Rules?

These groups don’t need a license and are allowed to solicit:

  • Religious and non-profit organizations;
  • Political campaigners;
  • Honorably discharged veterans with a peddler’s license;
  • Volunteer firefighters;
  • Public utility workers (with ID); and
  • People offering snow shoveling services within 24 hours after a snowstorm.
