New Jersey Open Public Records Act

What is the Open Public Records Act (“OPRA”)?

The New Jersey Open Public Records Act (“OPRA”), codified N.J.S.A. § 47:1A-1, et seq., governs the public’s access to government records in the Garden State. OPRA replaced the previous “Right to Know Law.”

Enacted in 2002, OPRA is intended to expand the public’s right of access to government records, create an administrative appeals process if access is denied, and define what records are and are not “government records.”

Disclaimer: A fee may be charged for providing copies. Each OPRA is processed differently for a variety of reasons (e.g., immediate availability of certain records, request requires additional time to compile necessary documents, redactions). However, non-commercial requests will be addressed and completed within seven (7) business days, while commercial requests will take up to fourteen (14) business days.

Raritan Township’s incumbent Municipal Clerk is Donna Kukla. She primarily serves as the secretary to the Township Committee and is the official custodian of all township records. To contact our Clerk, email: clerk@raritantwpnj.gov or call: (908) 806-6101.
